The Most Sugar-Packed Menu Item in America

What are some the worst fast food items out there? Women's Health magazine published a story of 12 food chain items "your dentist won't eat", as they're loaded with sugar. The number one item with the most sugar?

Cold Stone's Peanut Butter & Chocolate shake

The Gotta Have It size (12 oz) contains:

2,010 calories
153 grams of sugar
131 grams of fat (68g saturated, 2.5g trans)
880 mg sodium

That's more than a day's worth of calories for most people! I will no doubt be going nowhere near one of these shakes, or probably Cold Stone either, after hearing this!

5 Habits That Are Killing Your Body

We eat healthy, we exercise, yet we never seem to get anywhere. Sound familiar? Many people are misinformed and tricked by food packaging into thinking they're eating healthy when they're really not. Or you seem to be eating small amounts but are seeing no changes. Here are 5 common mistakes people make that could be hurting your body, too.

1. Skipping breakfast. We've heard it time and time again, but its the most important meal of the day! People who skipped breakfast were more likely to take up smoking, drinking, less likely to exercise and more likely to follow fat diets. People who do eat breakfast were about 30% less likely to be overweight or obese.

2.  Mindless eating. Snacking is meant to maintain your blood sugar and keep you energized between meals, but if you're snacking when you don't really need it (on the couch watching Glee, anyone?) you could be sabotaging all your healthy eating habits.

3. Huge portions. Portion sizes have tripled in the past 40 years, and so have our waistlines. Its not secret that restaurant size portions are about 2-3 times more than you should be eating at a meal, causing us to see large amounts of food as standard, thus eating more at home, too. In a restaurant, eat until you feel satisfied, not full and take the rest for leftovers. Other ways to eat less: have salad before a meal, snack on almonds throughout the day, and make sure you're getting enough fibre.

4. Calorie-laden drinks. Not only alcohol can do damage to your diet, but smoothies, soft drinks, coffee and juice can be dangerous, too. A grande caramel macchiato at Starbucks carries 240 calories, and an eggnog latte sits at 470, compared to a cup of brewed coffee which has 5 calories. When thats just your morning java to get you going, that is waaay too many calories, not to mention sugar and fat. (Simple ways to cut these in half? Ask for skim milk instead of the standard 2%, go half-sweet on the syrup, skip the whipped cream, or try their "skinny" options which include all 3 of these.) Beware of the nutritional information on your drink of choice before gulping it down, as even some juices are loaded with sugar.

5. Processed, saturated & preservative packed foods. Packaged foods are loaded with preservatives and harsh chemicals to keep them fresh. Try to steer clear of these foods as much as possible, and load up on natural foods like fruits, veggies and whole grain carbohydrates. As a general rule of thumb: the shorter the ingredients list, the healthier the food.

Sunday pancakes

Sunday being the day of rest and whatnot, people often like to have a nice big brunch on Sundays to relax with away from the stresses of the workweek. Today I felt like doing something different from my regular breakfast routine and decided to have pancakes.

Using a whole wheat pancake mix, I made health-conscious chocolate chip pancakes! Substituting chocolate chips for some leftover carob chips I had from making cookies, the result was quite delicious. Topping the pancakes with bananas proved to be a truly yummy breakfast! And if need be, pure maple is a healthy way to sweeten them up.

Sleep better - now!

Having trouble sleeping lately? Here are some tips from Women's Health magazine that have worked great for myself, to get a better night's sleep - more often.

  • Don't stress about it. Accept that some nights you'll sleep better than others. Stressing about it will only keep you up later
  • Take a bath. Not only will a hot bath relax you for bed, but as your body temperature drops afterwards, you should fall into a restful sleep.
  • Make some noise. Sounds known as white noise (like a fan or sound machine) can make it easier to sleep at night, especially if you sleep with a snorer. But putting your iPod on is not a good idea
  • Keep it cool. A colder bedroom will cause your body to function at calmer, more restful speeds. So keep the temperature low and add a few blankets if you need them.
  • No drinking or smoking! Alcohol and nicotine are stimulants that can not only make it difficult to fall asleep, but wake you up during the night as well.
  • Pillows are important. Make sure your pillows are supportive, comfortable and suited to your sleeping positions. Find the best pillow for your sleep style here
  • Cut the coffee! For some its noon, others is 7pm, but after a certain time you need to cut caffeine (that includes coffee, pop, chocolate, tea, etc) to be able to sleep well. Its different for everyone, so you need to figure out which time is your cut off.
  • Don't try to compensate. You can't make up for lost sleep by napping, going to bed super early or sleeping really late. You just need to get back on your regular schedule.
